Artist Statement Kai Kambel : Artist Statement

My unquenchable curiosity regarding the visual arts started in the primary grades. Reading comic books and about the visual arts, artists, and art history supported early experimentations using drawing and painting media.

Understanding and creating images, icons and illustrations have become my life’s work. My love of research and experimentation continues to fire/energize my need to create art. For me “Art is a way of life.” Art is how I make my way through the universe, and interact with society and nature. Art is my main way of communicating, and interacting in this world.

I create art as a primary means of concretizing the legacy of my existence as part of the ever-present moment and the continuum of time and space [in this universe]. I enjoy creating images, icons and illustrations that voice and document my human journey, work and activity as part of this era/these times. I create art simply because as a being in this universe it is my duty and my privilege/freedom to share my individual point of view as part of the greater human collective memory.

Mostly, I create two-dimensional artworks in several main styles using drawing, aqueous drawing and painting media, acrylics and surface textural materials on paper, board, or canvas. However my experimental nature and faith in the “envisioned image or icon” does not always allow me to be true to my main styles and techniques.

Often for me the image, idea or concept drives its own creation. I create works of art using and more often combining Drawing, Painting, Collage, and Graphic Arts techniques.

My art is my primary voice! Creating art is my contract with nature to mimic and recreate her ‘awe inspiring’ beauty. My art most simply is my legacy, all that I have in this world to share with others.
