Artist Statement My name is Betina George, and I am an high functioning autistic artist. I was born in the southernmost state of Rio Grande de Sul, Brazil, and have lived in the U.S. since I was five years old. After years of constant struggle with a developmental difference that I lacked the ability to effectively communicate, I found refuge in art and music, without which I would never have survived the constant exploitation and abuse that comes without the correct diagnosis. I am deeply influenced by the art produced by my husband's family, whose traditional Native form-line style spills over into my own seemingly surreal art. I have been favorably compared to Frida Kahlo, and her influence is apparent, but the only thing her images and mine have in common is the misconception that my images are surreal; in fact my art describes my very real inner world and the outer world as seen through the hyper-intense and super vivid perspective of autism.
