Artist Statement Some ten years ago ,Robert Lawson started out on a process of discovery, devising his unique method of painting directly onto the glass of wine/water bottles. With his special technique using oil & acrylics paint, brushes, spatulas and a variety of air brushes Robert today continues to distill the colours and the legends of the South-West of Western Australia onto the bottles. Thus, everyone of these special bottles is an original work of art.

Robert has always been involved with the visual arts. He realized as a young boy living in Wollongong that he wanted to be a painter when he won Cole’s Father’s Day competition. In his early twenties he started work as a camera assistant with METV, the television production unit that would eventually become SBS. Over the next few years he co-founded an educational publishing company, created audio-visuals for organizations such as Ansett and Telstra and helped establish the Magic Mirror Theatre and the Winter Theatre at the Maltings. In these venues he created pioneering designs and audio-visual environments for plays such as SAD SONG and SOME OTHER TOWN. He went on to create stunning images for a state-wide tour of the Bicentennial play WATERSHED and several Festival of Perth productions for the Black Swan Theatre Company including SISTER GIRL and BRAN NUE DAY. As if this diversity wasn’t sufficient, Robert traveled the world to romantic destinations such as Borneo, the Seychelles and Africa to work on a series of award winning documentaries such as BEFORE IT’S TOO LATE. From the beginning of his career Robert has worked as a stills photographer and his startlingly original images are in demand by publishers throughout the world.

Through his travels Robert Lawson has visited corners of Australia that most of us could only dream of and today the impressions that the continent’s deserts, mighty rivers, gorges and secret legendary places re-emerge in Robert’s paintings. But theses are not tame, bland landscapes, they are filtered through Robert’s uniquely fresh and lively imagination and understanding of the land. His paintings are keenly sought after and are held in private collections throughout the world. And of course, the original works of art on bottles, starling shards of light on glass are regularly exported to places such as Switzerland, Hong Kong, Germany, Malaysia, Singapore
