Artist Statement “IMAGINE STANDING ON THE SURFACE OF AN ATOM WITH A MAGIFYING GLASS IN YOUR HAND OR FOR THAT MATTER A TELESCOPE.”

"We exist as a brief moment in the history of time. We are the product of a series of cataclysmic cosmic action-reactions that have been occurring ever since the first moment of the big bang."

When two or more irresistible forces come together and fuse they become something different. This is the process of evolution. Paul believes this is the essence of creativity.

The above statement was uttered in a conversation with Frederick Clark in 1977. This statement humbled Paul and is the inspiration behind his art and remains so until this day.

Paul knew he wanted to be a professional artist when he was twelve years old. It was then that he was first introduced to the professional world of art, by his close friend the late Felix Aprahamian. Felix was a Classical musician and a Music critic for the Sunday Times Newspaper. Felix noticed his talents for visual expression and encouraged him to develop his art. It was around this time that Paul began to develop a unique drawing style that is still evolving today.

Paul Thompson was born in 1958 in Ipswich. He spent his early years growing up in North London. When was fourteen years old he moved to Thamesmead in South London where he lived until the age of twenty-five. While living on Thamesmead he was a founder member of the Thamesmead art club. It was here that he discovered what paints can do.

When he was fourteen he got his first camera. This introduced him to the power of photography and the use of optics and other visual aids that enabled him to search out images that lay beyond the range of human vision.

He has two main interests in life Natural Science and his art. Natural science informs and inspires him to make art.
In the late 1970s until 1989 he owned and ran a small Lithographic printing business in south London, first for an employer and later for himself. He did this for twelve years.

When he was Thirty-one he moved to County Durham in the North of England. Having many years of experience in the graphics industry he was self-taught but no qualifications and decided to enrol on a graphic arts course. Here he discovered digital media. He developed skills in photo-shop which he has been using for the past twenty-five years; after this he signed up for a HND in photography and later a (BA Hons) in fine arts.

Paul is a multi-discipline artist often using more than one medium to create his art. At times integrating photography, digital techniques, paints, collage, other graphic materials and painting with lights. He often uses bold colours, textures, and multiple layers of techniques to create desired affects.
