Description Established in 1825, the Port of Galveston is the oldest port west of New Orleans on the Gulf of Mexico. Facilities can handle cotton, grains, sugar, fruit, sulfur and other chemicals, containerized cargo, and include several ship yards and cruise terminals. At one time, immigration into the United States was second only to Ellis Island, earning Galveston the title of Ellis Island of the south.
