Artist Statement Layers are a reoccurring theme from the inception of my work at the Oregon School of Art & Craft. I earned my BFA in Metal Arts in 1998. That work explored layers in family life, relationships, and time, which influenced my ensuing thesis work and show. My newer work is an extension of that process and theme.

I spent years working in clay & metal and a variety of other more muted colors in my art. During the last five years I began to feel the need to add more vibrant and luminous color to my life & work. I experimented with different mediums, and eventually found that combining acrylics, and multi-media suited my needs and satisfied my desires for more color. I’ve felt drawn to explore the process of painting. I sometimes just exploring the way pigment blends, and layers before even knowing what each piece will eventually become. This has resulted in the freedom to just play with the paint, put the piece aside and come back to it when I know what it wants to be.

As a final step, I use a technique called "Encaustic", a clear wax applied over the dry paint, which adds depth, deepens & enhances the patina of the paint and gives it a protective coating.

Learning through trial and error has allowed me to go beyond just learning to paint. It has allowed me to expand slowly and find my own style and palette.
