Description This is a photo of the Purple Swamphen (Porphyrio porphyrio), a large Australian Gallinule up to 50cm high. The photograph was taken by a brackish lagoon on the outskirts of Port Douglas, Queensland Australia, and this beautiful bird is not uncommon in this area. The purple is an iridescence rather than a pigment, so is only distinct when the lighting is right and I was pleased to catch this quite nicely on this shot seeming to be admiring the water lilies in this natural lake. A large Saltwater Crocodile also made his home here to add to the excitement :0)
