Artist Statement Hi, I’m Justin. I played trombone for 10 years before becoming burned out in college due to a needed focus on my top priority: obtaining an information systems degree in the business school. I was becoming increasingly frustrated—my limited amount of time meant I was unable to put in the amount of work it required to be great in the music world.
Heavily involved in jazz at the time, a creative mind was essential. Giving up playing meant giving up my only creative outlet. I decided to quit playing seriously my senior year—the business degree ranked higher in the priority list and I really wanted to graduate. My creative outlet disappeared.
Two to three years went by. Not much playing. And then I bought my first SLR, a Canon 400D. I’d always been interested in photography, occasionally shooting with an old film SLR camera of my parent’s when in grade-school and begging for a digital camera when they were reasonably priced ($400 for a 2 megapixel Olympus point and shoot that my parent’s still have and use). My efforts in photography though, they were never serious.
I’ve been photographing with a 400D since April of 2007, and a 40D since March of 2009. Since early 2007, I’ve continually become more serious about art in the photographic medium. Mostly, I’m just happy to have found a place to express my creativity once again.
I work professionally as a software developer for a small company where creativity in code is certainly welcomed. Having a career I enjoy allows me to focus most of my free time, worry free, in the world of photography.
My overall hope, purpose even, is to make images that people can enjoy at multiple levels: from superficial to deeper levels of thought. But for now, I’m just happy to be out shooting and improving the quality of my images.
