Artist Statement Art by Linda Hopkins

I was born in Cardiff in Wales U.K. and have been creative for as long as I can remember. I now live in Cwmbran where my conservatory doubles up as my art studio.

In the early years I always found delight in mixing together the wonder of water colours and creating my own little works of art. These days I usually work in other mediums, these mainly being acrylic and oils as I find them more versatile to work with. I love the outdoors to generate ideas; especially in the summer when on a clear day you can usually see for miles. Sometimes the colours themselves inspire me as I mix them together on the palette. In fact, inspiration can be found anywhere I look, allowing my mind to drift towards possibilities of a new creation.

Abstract and semi-abstract art is a great joy to me because I am able to be more creative and expressive as most of my paintings are from my imagination. I usually have an idea for a painting and the colours that I plan to use before I begin, very often my imagination runs riot as I work and the painting can sometimes turn into a completely different, but superior one than my original thought.

I strive to create images on the canvas that tune in with an emotion in a positive way. Although the paintings are clearly abstract in appearance, some can be labelled under different categories. I don’t usually validate my paintings by using statements to describe them as I feel this allows the onlooker to use their own imagination to see different perspectives.

Although mainly self taught in the mediums that I use, I achieved a distinction in the art section of a course that I took in college. I have painted for many years but it’s only this year that I’ve decided to sell them.

Most of the time I feel positive and happy and hopefully some of that is reflected in my work. One of my beliefs is that we can achieve almost anything that we set our minds to do or create (with some effort of course!) and that life is to experience and enjoy. I feel that being creative is a great expression of the mind of which I have a deep fascination. I hope the wonderful feelings that I have when I work is captured in my paintings.
