Artist Statement I've never like artist's statements too much but here's what I used for a recent group show. It's not too bad : )
Artist Statement
The work I do is best explained by my influences. I have alway had an affinity for American Mid-Century design and illustration as well as Pop Art and culture. Comic artist Jack Kirby, jazz illustrator Jim Flora as well as historically important painters like Stuart Davis all hold the same weight in my imagination. The chasm between "fine" and "commercial" art is disregarded as long as the result is to my satisfaction. " Pop Surrealism" or " Cartoon Surrealism" are labels fairly common today and I suppose come closest to describing what I do. However," Eye Candy" is just fine with me.
Since I use a more illustrative technique, hardboard panels or primed paper are the best choices for me when working. Generally a sketch or doodle from scrap paper, a napkin, notepad or whatever I've drawn on at the time is the starting point. Often times, the refined design is an almagam of different shapes, characters, etc. from a variety of sources. This pick and choose process often gives some of my paintings a collage feel and the trick is to make it work. In my experience the "muse" comes in pieces and through working I flesh it out into something a bit odd but hopefully interesting and ...good.
