Description The term 'nocturne' was coined by Chopin to depict a type of harmonious, soothing, musical composition. Whistler appled it to night scenes, where, he pointed out, ordinary buildings transform into castles. All musical compositions involve a harmony and/ or contrast between different elements. Here I present a blending of different colour lights that the night scene presents. The painting began (around 1984) as an acrylic, which was then photographed and is now re-worked digitally. The scene is Shandon Park Mills on the Royal Canal at Phibsborough, Dublin, Ireland. I have repeated the theme in a later acrylic painting, and also taken other approaches to presenting the Mills at night. The location has since been developed as a tasteful apartment complex, retaining much of the charater of the old Mills.
