Description The Sacr-Coeur, consecrated in 1919, is one of the most iconic monuments in Paris. At the top of the Butte Montmarte, it has one of the most beautiful panoramic views of the capital, from more than 400 metres above ground. In a Roman-Byzantine style, the Sacr Coeur is recognizable by its white colour. Inside the building, the ceiling is decorated with the largest mosaic in France measuring about 480 m. The crypt is also worth a visit. And to go even higher up, visitors can access the dome where the 360 view of Paris is magnificent.Begun in 1875 in the wake of the Franco-Prussian War and the chaos of the Paris Commune, Sacr-Cur is a symbol of the former struggle between the conservative Catholic old guard and the secular, republican radicals. It was finally consecrated in 1919, standing in utter contrast to the bohemian lifestyle that surrounded it.Some 234 spiralling steps lead you to the basilicas dome, which affords one of Paris most spectacular panoramas up to 30km on a clear day. Weighing in at 19 tonnes, the bell called La Savoyarde in the tower above is the largest in France.
