Description Sakurajima(Japanese:, literally 'Cherry blossomIsland') is an activestratovolcano, formerly anislandand now a peninsula, inKagoshima PrefectureinKyushu, Japan.Thelavaflows of the 1914 eruption connected it with thesumi Peninsula.It is the most active volcano in Japan.The volcanic activity still continues. On the day I visited in 2015 there were 3 minor eruptions.Sakurajima is a stratovolcano. Itssummithas three peaks,Kita-dake(northern peak),Naka-dake(central peak) andMinami-dake(southern peak) which is active now.Kita-dake is Sakurajima's highest peak, rising to 1,117m (3,665ft) abovesea level. The mountain is in a part ofKagoshima Bayknown as Kink-wan. The former island is part of thecityofKagoshima.The surface of this volcanic peninsula is about 77km2(30sqmi).
