Artist Statement I grew up with a black-and-white TV but saw everything in color anyway. As a young child, I was scared of a big pink monster on the cartoons who ate houses. My mother couldn’t help but laugh when I told her my fears—how did I know the monster was pink?

I still see things my way. In my acrylic and oil pastel paintings, the everyday and the ordinary become iconic reminders of the accessibility of imagination. My art is entry to a parallel world where nothing is mundane and color is a natural resource. Works range from abstract to pop. Natural-light photography is a secondary specialty.

Though I hold a bachelor’s degree in Landscape Architecture and write as an authority on garden design, the true roots of my artistic nature were honed early in the children’s art classes I took at the University of Georgia. There, from ages seven to twelve, I studied under Dr. Frank Wachoviak, author of the landmark book on juvenile art education, Emphasis Art. The affect of those years of Saturday morning classes is evident now in my adult work: My basis for color theory was well developed early, as was a working perception of spatial design. And it’s probably no mistake that there’s an element of play in many of my pieces today.
