Artist Statement A little bit about me, I have been dabbling in photography for nearly forty years. I still, on occasion use my various film cameras: Nikon F2As, Bronica ETR, Speed Graphic 23, and 1 Speed and 2 Crown Graphic 45’s. I do all my own color and black and white processing from 35mm to 4 by 5 film. I was taught by an elderly German photographer in Bavaria who did not believe in pre-mixed chemistry in the darkroom (thank God he didn't want to coat glass plates.) I started my transition from film to digital in the late '90's but still keep my fingers in the soup when the shoot calls for accuracy I then employ my Nikon scanner to convert the shots to digital format. The early digital cameras left much to desired but the current crop are quite impressive. I will be changing to either a Canon 5D or a 40D in the near future; when I do that will end my film use.

Ok, here we go, I currently use a Canon 300D, in and of itself not the most glorious digital camera. Lens is either a Canon 18~55 kit lens or a Tamron 28~300 Xr Di 3.5. I use a Panosauraus panoramic tripod head, though I do a lot of hand held work. I do shoot in Camera RAW for the best data available. For digital backup I use a Kodak 4800, a nice little camera but only stores in JPG format so I try not to use it much. I do generally have my F2As with me as a film backup.

I do not use a 'stitcher' per se, I use PhotoShop CS2 or CS3 in manual mode to assemble my panoramic - automate does not generally work for what I need. I then work the image to smooth the frames one into the next. Average file size of the finished is between 60 and 100 meg psd file and could take 12 hours or more to complete.

If you look at my shot of the harbor at Charleston, South Carolina, this is 5 shots taken from left to right from the Battery in Charleston, South Carolina. This series of five landscape shots varies in size from 6.08 meg for the left most shot and 5.72 to 5.77 for the other 4 shots in the series. This was shot hand held with a Canon 300D using the kit lens (18~55mm) set at 24mm, white balance set for sun, 1/500 ISO 200 f:13. The composite panoramic is a 448.16 meg psd file (15,156 by 2482 pixels) with no enlargement. I calculate the size of this print could be as large as 1 by 5.5 meters with no loss of detail. I did this calculation because I created a Photo Mural for one of my clients using 4¼ inch square ceramic tile, please look at my site www.applebycomputerservice.com and click on Ceramic and Glass Tile Murals, this will give you an idea of what my work is.
