Elsa Kendall, Santa Fe Member Since September 2007 Artist Statement I've been inspired by the magic of photography since I was eight years old, maybe before. When I was given a Brownie Hawkeye to use I became hooked. I've used a lot of different cameras since then and continue to use them to make portraits, whether they be of people or shells or flowers, and explore and document many other things. I often use ancient mediums such as beeswax encaustic, and combine this with contemporary pigment prints to create timeless pieces that transcend any definition. Or at least that is my hope.
I use photography shamelessly in most aspects of my creative work: I am not a purist in that sense. I continue to be enthralled with what is possible in all the new discoveries regarding this medium, and the ability to combine this with older, alternative methods is food for my expanding imagination.
Working with the Secret Garden images I was shown that it is possible to go beyond what the physical eyes can see. I now realize that's what I'd been seeking all along. The journey continues, and I am blessed to live in a wooded area in the mountains of northern New Mexico, where I work and teach and continue on my adventures.
I just ordered Alma Always Knows the Way (photo montage) in a 16" square canvas framed with "brushed gold with beads #705", and it is BEAUTIFUL!!!
