Fennel Blythe, Arcata Member Since May 2007 Artist Statement Formally educated with a Master's degree in marine biology, Fennel Blythe combines her analytical, scientific mind with her imaginative, creative counterpart as an Artist. To relieve stress in her last quarter of graduate school and to explore another side of her brain, Fennel enrolled in an introductory drawing class. In that class she discovered a side of herself that she did not know. This discovery spurred her years later to seek private instruction and ultimately to pursue another degree, this time completing a Bachelor's degree in fine art from the University of New Mexico. Since that time, Fennel has explored many artistic styles and media moving from classical oil painting to hand-painted designs on standup paddle-boards to abstract expressionism.
A recent transplant to Arcata, CA from Chattanooga, Tennessee, Fennel is stoked to be in the majestic natural environment of northern California. Employed by Pacific Outfitters, Fennel guides kayak, paddle-board, and hiking tours and instructs clients on paddling skills. When not on the water or in the forest, Fennel is often at her home in Arcata working on the next painting, deriving imagery from her copious exploration of our natural world.
