Description Shelter Island Collage. Like a lot of 'islands' in San Diego County, Shelter Island is a peninsula, and a man-made one at that. For decades it was just a sand bar. But in the early-'50s, the city and developers turned it into an 'island' that could give shelter to yachts and to people. Now it's 1.2 miles of well-landscaped hotels, ships chandlers, yacht clubs, a strip of a park where not walking seems a shame and free parking lots with one of the best views in the county. As you sit on a bench under one of the walkway's pergolas, the downtown San Diego skyline and the clutter of Mission Hills and Old Town are in the middle distance. Nearer is North Island and the iconic twin hangars there. Slightly to the right you can make out the lovely arch of the San Diego-Coronado Bridge. Farther right are the channel that leads to the sea and the tip of Point Loma.If you're lucky and it's a really clear day, you can see Mexico's Coronado Islands (not to be confused with the peninsula just over that lovely bridge).
