Description 2009 RC deWinter ~ All Rights Reserved ~~ Two very old and rare clocks bear silent witness to the passage of time.
The tall case ('grandfather') clock was made and signed by Aaron Miller of Elizabethtown, New Jersey, circa 1747. The case is cherry wood. Once owned by a ship captain Smith of Mystic, Connecticut, today these clocks are highly prized and worth many many thousands of dollars.
More on Aaron Miller:The first definite record of a New Jersey clockmaker is the following advertisement which appeared in the New York Gazetteer of November 23, 1747.
Aaron Miller, clockmaker in Elizabethtown, East Jersey, makes and sells all sorts of clocks after the Dutch manner, with expedition. He likewise makes compasses and chains for surveyors; as also bells of any size, having a foundry for that purpose and has cast several who have been approved to be good; and will supply any person on a timely notice with any of the above articles at any reasonable rate.
The regulator wall clock was made by the E. Howard Company of Boston, Massachusetts; E. Howard was one of the premier manufacturers of quality clocks in the United States from the mid-19th to the early 20th centuries. This clock was likely made sometime between 1842 and 1860. A clock very similar to this recently sold for $12,650.
