Darla Brock, Charleston, SC Member Since March 2009 Artist Statement As with most artists, I have been drawing or painting as far back as I can remember. Although, I was greatly encouraged by my mother to develop my artistic talent, I never pursued an art career until recently. Oftentimes when I tell people that I don't have a degree in art, they say "Ahh, you're a self-taught artist". However, I have never thought of myself as self-taught. I have much help and inspiration along the way. People like Lynn Long, Tom Douglas, Robert Ring, and Carolyn Watson have taught me so much that I feel like I would not be at the level I am without all their guidance and help. Of course, I have studied as well as been inspired by many of the old masters.
Now that my children are grown, I have decided to dedicate myself to furthering my artistic career. I work mostly in oils, watercolors, photography. Nature and flowers are my favorite subjects, but I do portraiture as well.
My greatest desire is to become the artist I want to be, and my mother knew I could be all those years ago.
