Midlife Passage
Lashing myself to the mast of independence, ready to brave the tortured depths unmapped on any globe, wild winds whip my hair back from my face, affording an excellent view of that far unknown horizon.
Can this bold barkentine withstand the heavy seas to make port intact, or will she break apart, wormeaten hull too long in drydock hoisted high on land?
Having fitted her with needful things for voyaging, there is no way to know this other than to chart the course with compass card and spyglass trained to pick out constant stars that light the journey home.
And if she splits and sinks to anonymity cradled in the arms of the trident god, log lost to legend lore, it will not matter much to many; just a faithful handful standing somewhere on that shore, waiting, arms outstretched in welcome to embrace the sister sailed from forevermore. 2011 RC deWinter
