Description 'The Rockville Links Club is a premier golf club located on the south shore of Long Island. For over 85 years, the facility has been host to some of the areas finest players' ... except if they are black or Jewish. Rockville Centre is my home town and the house where I lived for many years was just across the street from the racist club. Growing up as a Jewish boy, I remember peering through the fence wondering what was so special about the place. On the front lawn a black lawn jockey held a lantern and several yards away in the shade of some pine trees, the caddies waited in the early morning for the opportunity to work. One day, I spied a Jewish friend sitting on the bench waiting with the others. Later that week, he approached me at school. Blushing, he said; 'You ought to caddy there too; you can make some real good money.' I just shook my head. To myself, I thought: he was a like a Jewish slave who had crossed the Red Sea, but returned to work for Pharaoh on the weekends. People of color and Jews are still barred from membership at the Rockville Links Country Club; just as it is with many other private establishments throughout our nation.
I.M. Spadecaller, Clearwater Member Since March 2010 Artist Statement Welcome to Spadecaller's Galleries.
About the Artist: Spadecaller (Matt Schwartz) is the pseudonym he uses for his visual art, writing, poetry, and video creations; initially, the name came about by his direct approach on subjects that focus on humanitarian issues that impact our world today. He's known to call a spade a spade.
In the late 1950’s, Spadecaller’s formal training in traditional oil painting techniques commenced. He was eight years old, when he started private painting lessons. Through considerable personal sacrifice, his mother, who has since passed away, nurtured his artistic talents and provided him with many of the tools and circumstances to launch his creative journey. Memories of art exhibitions in New York City that his mother introduced him to continue to motivate his quest for excellence. Spadecaller attended The School of Visual Arts in New York City (1970-71), and during the 70's up until the late 80's, he exhibited acrylic and oils in Montreal and New York. As a realist painter, he strives to capture the beauty of nature and the soul of humankind. Due to the onset of chronic illness in the late nineties and with the advent of image editing software, he turned to creating digital hand painted images and photographic art - fusing these into an art form worthy of the same gratification that he had once found in oils.
