Description This oil painting is from a weekend visit in Newport Rhode Island in 1987. A year later it was donated to the Atlanta Artist Club for its annual auction. The whereabouts of the painting is unknown.

Artist Statement I am Michael Anthony Edwards. Some of you know of my work by my initials, or my first and last name. Others know of me by the addition of my middle initial, or the rest of you may know of me by my full name. When I was 5 years old, there was kindergarten instead of pre-school. Mrs. Maxwell, my teacher, was extremely impressed with my work and sent it to Saint Mary of the Woods College. During my childhood I would often draw and paint (in watercolor) cowboys, Indians, horses, and landscapes. In high school I began to use oil paints as I gravitated toward sports, portraits, and religious themes. Also, in high school I studied under Venus Perry in a small group. She offered me personal instruction, noting my talent was further advanced than for her other students. After high school graduation I worked full time as a draftsman while attending the Herron School of Art in the evening, where Paul Sweany had a great influence on my drawing. My goal to earn a BFA was interrupted by the Draft and two years in the US Army. After 4 months in the army a small pencil drawing of my combat boots got the attention of one of my company members, resulting in commissions for several large charcoals of the subject as well as portraits. By my separation date, I decided to pursue Architecture instead of Fine Arts. Being from a working-class family, I made the most of “at-hand” resources attending classes at Purdue’s Indianapolis campus where I earned a BS degree, & later earned an MS degree from Georgia State University. During the day I would work for engineering firms, and save the weekend for art. My subjects would be mostly landscapes and philosophical topics. Occasionally I would sell my Art as I concentrated on a career in the construction industry. Years later, I would spend more time on Art, and in 2012 I started an interdisciplinary networking group, Interrupted Art and Design,on Linkedin.com.
