Artist Statement Based in Southeast London / Kent borders, Helen Laker is an artist working in a variety of areas, testing different mediums and surfaces to produce a variety of work. A painter, 3D/Relief worker, illustrator, storyboard artist and poet, Helen also continues to work in the film and TV industry.

The thing that I love about art is that it can be so versatile, so many roads to explore. Art has been central to my life, I grew up in an artistic household and since graduating from the LCC have been working in a variety of roles which have all been art based in one way or another. One role included acting in Tracey Emin’s first feature film, ‘Top Spot’; it was inspiring to work with such a prestigious artist.

In my work I use mixed medium to create different effects. I like to work with contrasts so I combine simple line work with flat colours, sometimes abstract or semi abstract forms and motifs, and varying degrees of detail creating multi-dimensional, symbolic pieces.

Influences include Roberto Matta, William Blake, Giorgio De Chirico and Japanese masters, where simplified linear form generates its own dimension and mystical properties, and artists such as Gustav Klimt who use gold in their work. At present I’m particularly interested in using gold to create depth through its reflective quality. I am also starting to work with leaded light and stained glass, which is a discipline I intend to learn and work to the fullest.
