Artist Statement Candace Noell Buethorn was raised in St. Louis, Missouri, a cultural crossroads of the Midwest. Buethorn is the middle child in a talented family of seven. Her parents, an artist and a musician, encouraged their children to study the classics in art, literature and music where creative expression flourished. Consequently, in addition to painting, Buethorn embraced writing and performance throughout her school years, garnering awards in music, poetry and drama At Principia College in Elsah, Illinois, where she earned her Bachelor of Arts in 1973, she was introduced to the medium that would capture her heart -- watercolor.
