Description The 'transformation' of a face during certain processes (meditation, age, experience, etc) has always been the focus of my work. Using bold brushes of red, black, and yellow, these two gouache paintings represent some of my best paintings of that period in neo expressionistic style.Original: gouache on paper. Year: 2007.
KATERINA STAMATELOS, New York City Member Since October 2016 Artist Statement I consider myself as a self-taught artist. I create art in large as well as in small formats. After years of experiments, I decided that my preferred medium is gouache on paper! Very little is known about the unique properties of gouache: believe me, it's an exciting medium! My fascination with it started as I used to marvel over Medieval manuscript paintings! I now use a "mixed media" that consists of gouache and ink. Ink gives me the opportunity to create amazing details; gouache gives me the brilliance in colors and the fluidity of using it in several ways.
My influences are: German expressionism and the Greek Orthodox ikons. I owe the persistent use of gold to the latter one. My preferred "theme" is portrait: not of famous people, but the portraying of transformative force on an everyday face. You will find more detailed info as you visit ...
