Artist Statement Patty Cooper is an artist several times over: a painter in both oils and pastels, a singer/songwriter, graphic designer and Web developer. She might spend one day painting, the next polishing a new song, the next launching a website for a client. Even while cooking or running errands, she’s mulling over a challenging passage in the painting on her easel or she’s working out a chord change in her newest song.

There was a time when the idea of adding “painter” to her identity would have made her laugh. Then she spent a summer watching several pastel portrait painters work in Provincetown, Massachusetts. Seeing their various approaches and styles let her realize she had a strong desire to discover her own approach and style. Within months of beginning to paint in pastel she was accepting commissions for portraits.

Now Patty works mostly in oil, painting whatever she finds most beautiful- a striking face, a figure’s gesture, a landscape, an intimate look at a still life. Her work is set apart by her unapologetic use of color and her confidence in line. Collectors of her work say that choosing one of Patty Cooper’s paintings is like falling in love.
