Artist Statement Phyllis Bryce Ely is a graduate of Rochester Institute of Technology (1981, BFA High Honors) who has worked as an artist in the Rochester area for roughly 30 years. She primarily paints regional landscapes en plein air, working with soft pastels and oils. She is regarded for her landscapes of upstate New York Finger Lakes area and southern Maine. She is also a printmaker focused on painterly monotypes.

"My paintings share how it feels to be in the many places I choose to paint. Objects in the landscape interest me because of their shape, color, and pattern. As I paint, the trees, hills and more become characters in my composition, helping to tell a story of the wonder of a place," comments Phyllis.

Phyllis’ work is included in many corporate and private collections. She has received honors and recognition over the years; most recently at the Sonnenberg Arts festival in Canandaigua, NY and the Clothesline Arts Festival of the Memorial Art Gallery. In the greater Rochester, NY area she is represented by The Oxford Gallery, the Memorial Art Gallery Store, and The Mill Art Center & Gallery. Phyllis teaches at the Memorial Art Gallery’s Creative Workshop and Cascade Art Center at Rochester Art Supply and is a member of The Genesee Valley Plein Air Painters and The Print Club of Rochester.

Phyllis is also an avid curler at the Rochester Curling Club. She creates paintings and original prints depicting the increasingly popular winter sport. More of her work may be seen at www.curlingart.com.
