Description Silhouetted against the sun, the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS ABRAHAM LINCOLN (CVN-72) lies tied up at a deperming pier along the Elizabeth River. Wrapped vertically around the LINCOLN are cables that, when energized, will reduce the ship's permanent magnetism, thus helping to protect it from magnetic mines and torpedoes.
