Elizabeth Matthews, Saint Germain en Laye, France
Member Since March 2018
Artist Statement Elizabeth Matthews is best known for her mixed media paintings, drawings, and sculptures made by a combining of household objects and classical artist’s techniques. “My work relies on the moment when an act of mundane labour, like folding clothes or putting away toys, suggests to me a transformation – the idea comes, and that is where I begin to work.” Matthews presented at the annual seminar for PhD researchers hosted by iconic feminist philosopher Luce Irigaray in 2013, and then collaborated with irigaray for an exhibition in Warwick, UK, in 2014. She performed at the European Society for Aesthetics conference in Dublin in 2015, and made an exhibition at the Burren College of Art in 2016. Matthews holds a BFA in painting (University of Louisiana, 2010) and a PhD in Fine Art (Burren College of Art, National University of Ireland, Galway, 2016). She has received awards, artist residencies, exhibited work internationally, taught art, and engaged with outsider populations. Her themes include utopian dreaming, mother-daughter relations, and domestic labour. Her current project explores strong women, combing imagery of the women with household items, for example, a clock. Matthews currently lives in France with the youngest of her five daughters.
