Artist Statement Artistically, I am a completely “digital" artist, doing everything in the digital realm (except for the printing, of course). So far, I find it expedient to obtain all of the images used in my works with my trusty camera (currently a D80), The raw material is then abused with copious use of Photoshop (w various plug-ins, as needed). Most of my inspiration comes from nature, music, science (and the limits thereof) and the juxtaposition of time and light. As far as the insider Art / outsider Art question goes I am about as far “Outside” as it is possible to get without a prescription (being entirely self-taught). Stylistically, I suppose, my work exists at the crossroads of surrealism, psychedelia, and abstract expressionism. Practically, I hope you find it intriguing and thought-provoking.

I was born in Chicago, IL and spent my formative years in Evanston and Cary (suburbs). Preferred Evanston, but did enjoy the woodlands & fields still to be found on suburbia’s forgotten edge. Also was fond of creating (and reading about) alternative realities, so I did draw and paint some as a youth but was more fascinated by music (!) and the outdoors (fishing, hiking, canoeing, camping etc etc etc). Spent the 1980s at college, and eventually obtained a Ph.D in Biological Chemistry from the University of Michigan. Did some drawing and photography as time and inclination allowed. Got married in 1989 and moved to the Bay Area in 1990 and joined the “biotech revolution”. Spent 17 years working at various places on the Peninsula (for those who care about such things there are traces of that period available from PubMed / US patent office). Traveled a lot though the 90s (France, Costa Rica, Patagonia, Brazil, Japan- sometimes associated with conferences, sometimes just to see the place), taking more pictures as I went along. Favorite places to visit were art museums and ruins.

Eventually I bought Photoshop 3.0 (Windows). Knew immediately that this was the means to further realize my artistic impulses but was limited both by the computer hardware of that period and by film-based cameras. Still I taught myself some and bided my time. Left the suburbs for San Francisco in 1998 (about time too!). Spent 5 years fixing the house we could afford. Became a father. Then in 2003/2004 acquisition of a Canon G3 & a real computer (got a G5) combined to re-ignite my creative energies. The first work of the current period (At Play on the Far Lawns, 2004) is visible on Flickr.
