Artist Statement My interest in art flourished from an early age. I was constantly "making" something, including designing dresses, painting and gluing oddly-shaped stones found on the beach, drawing portraits, using pressed leaves with watercolor, and making intricate yarn bracelets, which I gave away to friends and family.
In middle school, I became interested in sewing and working with beads to create pillows and blankets. Sadly, much of my art was misplaced due to frequent moves my family made. I also began drawing more frequently and using newspaper/magazine imagery to supplement my artwork. As was the case during my childhood, I had a tendency to give away my work to people I cared about.
This "giving away" is due to a number of reasons. Firstly, I gifted my art to others, so that they could enjoy it and know how deeply I cared about them. Secondly, every time I completed a piece of artwork, it no longer belonged to me. It became its own entity, so no one truly owned it. Therefore, although I took pride in the time, effort, and enjoyment received from creating a particular piece, I could no longer keep it for myself.
During late adolescence, as I contemplated college majors, I struggled between my love of art and psychology. Due to various reasons, I chose psychology and am currently pursuing a PhD in this field. However, my passion for creating art remains strong and allows me to express myself on a level which defies logic and critical thinking.
Owning a piece of my art is similar to owning a piece of my thoughts and feelings at a particular moment in time, a moment which was captured and will never be duplicated. I hope you experience as much joy viewing my galleries as I have creating these pieces.
“A sincere artist is not one who makes a faithful attempt to put on to canvas what is in front of him, but one who tries to create something which is, in itself, a living thing.”
- William Dobell
