Artist Statement Jeff Del Nero
Born: California, 1959

Born in Northern California in a rural area inland from San Francisco, Jeff Del Nero has always been interested in the images and sensibilities of the laborer, and common worker. Even more specifically the agricultural laborer, focusing on sowing seed, and harvesting fruit.
Since his one man show in 1983, ‘Agriculture: Laborers & Landscapes’, this has been an essential and driving theme in his work. By 1986 Jeff was working on a series of paintings about Orange County, where he saw a transition from a predominately agricultural environment turning into a succession of planned communities. This work evolved into a description of the area rather than a primary focus on the people working in the fields of Orange County.
Del Nero arrived in Southern California to attend Art Center College of Design, His intent was commercial art, but his love prevailed when he decided to focus his energy to painting the images that were personally compelling for him. In recent years his work has taken on more breadth and depth of form. Using the world around him as metaphors of his faith. His Christian beliefs become the undercurrent of the images he has been working with over the past ten years and the textures and colors relate to the inevitable decay and mortality of all that surrounds us.
Over the last five years Jeff has been included in some important group shows. His most important show to date has been his inclusion in the the show ‘Heroes, Heroines, idols and Icons’, at the Muckenthaler Cultural Center in Fullerton, curated by Norman Lloyd. This was a great opportunity to state the heroic qualities of his laborers amongst artists such as Thomas Hart Benton and David Alfaro Siquieros.
When looking at Jeff’s work take your time and enjoy the subtleties, because this work unfolds slowly and methodically. Many times the second or third viewing will begin to deliver on the hidden harmonies of our human condition he seeks to explore.
