Dry Eyes
Autumn in these hills is irresistible - so many trees, so many colors; and though I know it's the result of veins choking off the chlorophyll that keeps leaves green in summer, the blaze of gold, burnt orange, purple, it's magick nonetheless.
Some nights when I can't sleep I take the woods road over to the chasm to lose myself in the roaring chorus of the falls, the mesmerizing dance of moonlight on the river. I stand stockstill, transfixed, on that high bridge, shedding all the disappointments of the day.
Inevitably, though, I think of you as I stare down into that great cleft cut by these rushing waters some ten thousand years ago. I own its twin inside my heart; the tears I cried for you scored it as indelibly as this sandstone has been carved.
But the chasm in my chest is dry; I have no tears to shed. After the flood loosed by your leaving ended, my tear ducts, like the veins in these bright leaves, choked. My eyes are autumn leaves dry, unnourished, dying.
Each time I make this journey I wonder, half hoping, if I'll cry when your smile washes through my mind. I never do and most likely never will. Having lost my only irreplaceable treasure, what else is there to mourn? ~ copyright 2016 RC deWinter Located in Keeseville, NY, and called 'The Grand Canyon of the East', the Ausable Chasm is an ancient sandstone gorge. Here the Ausable River shines under a full moon as it rushes on its way to Lake Champlain.
