Artist Statement I first studied art as a very small child at the Akron Art Institute. It was there I remember learning to color to the edges of the paper, and I haven’t stopped the habit. My my early ambitions with oil pastels and poster paints were occasionally rewarded with colored ribbons at the Polsky’s Art Show.

In the first grade, I not only colored the apple in front of me,
but its mottled waxy skin, simply because it was lovely.

I became more serious in school, and continued to compete and gain awards at Polsky’s and at other juried shows, including the Ohio Governor’s Show. When I majored in Studio Art at Kent State University, I quickly developed a love of drawing and painting the figure in oils, and gloried in achieving a likeness of form and expression of spirit.

I stayed true to representational art in an abstract world,
remembering my delight in the apple of my childhood.

It is easy to study art and quite another leap to become a career artist, especially as a portrait or landscape painter. So, instead of attempting to paint when the unemployment rate was over 12% in the early 1980’s, I opted for a master’s degree in Educational Media. From there, I worked in the medical illustration department at the Northeast Ohio Universities College of Medicine.

In the 1990s I joined the desktop publishing revolution as a freelance graphic designer and web site developer. I currently use all Adobe products in their Creative Suite. My graphic design portfolio and web design experimentation can be seen at www.rimkedesign.com

In 2004, after my first “brush up” lesson to familiarize myself with watercolor, I exclaimed with delight “I’m using my degree!” It was evident to me that my painting years at Kent had still left their mark. I have been painting at every opportunity ever since.

As the digital design world grows more and more complicated,
I long for the simplicity of paper and canvas.
