Artist Statement Kelly Logan Graham lives in Bluffton, SC, near the May River. Born in southern New Mexico, and raised in Blowing Rock, NC, Graham graduated from North Carolina State University School of Design in Raleigh, in 1981, where he studied with artists including Joe Cox, Ray Musselwhite and Jack Keely.
Kelly paints in his home studio, from his boat, and on location, specializing in plein-air landscapes and waterway scenes. Graham's earliest paintings were watercolors, but in recent years oils have been his preference. His studio still life paintings often feature themes of sea life and local flora. Graham’s latest work focuses on the Appalachian and Smokey mountains. His art is in private and corporate collections in the US and the UK. He has also painted in Europe, the Bahamas and the Caribbean during his travels. Commissions for designers and individuals have been an important addition to his repertoire.
“I have always been intrigued by the horizon, and the subtle contrasts of shade and shape that define distance and scale. I try to create art with a sense of time and place. Dramatic light is a hallmark of my most recent paintings, with a palette of deep, layered color. I regard my art as representational, stylistically wandering between realism, impressionism and expressionism, I look for balance between what I see and what I feel. Each painting has a foundation in drawing, a passion that I have enjoyed my entire life. I try to retain the spontaneity of my first sketches in the final painting."
