Description The term, forty acres and a mule, refers to an act set in place by Maj. Gen. William T. Sherman. The act was set up to give each freed Black farmer who fought in the Civil War forty acres of land and a mule if available. The act was put into effect in 1865 but was revoked about a year later by President Andrew Johnson. This worn and burnt bank note represents the lost fruits of labor.
