Description John Williams (Ioane Viliamu in the local language) of the London Missionary Society was the first missionary to arrive in what is now American Samoa in 1832. 7 years later, while working in New Hebrides, he was killed and eaten by cannibals. His bones were eventually recovered and and returned to American Samoa where they are interred in the Congregational Christian Church of Apia, the oldest church on the island. A memorial plaque stands outside the church. Original photo.
