Artist Statement Everything to me is a point of view. Perspective is not just a foundation of visual arts but an institution of voice. Perspective allows us to argue the minute details; the differences between ‘sea foam’ and ‘teal’. Perspective allows us to debate the heavier questions; the differences of evolution vs. creation. Perspective allows me to hover between digital and film photography. But then again, perspective is the appearance of things relative to one another as determined by their distance to the viewer. Born in Washington State and being a native of the Pacific Northwest has given me a more relaxed perspective; the opportunity to drink my coffee and watch the rain rather than trying to escape from it. The perspective of my work often reflects the same point of view. Look up, look down, or look with one eye closed, whatever will enable one to see things from a new perspective will reveal a new point of view. Things tend to become more fragile from a new perspective.

I have always had a perspective on things, my own point of view. Things became much more fragile when I became a father. All the inspiration I could ever need is now the one pulling t-shirts out of the bottom drawer and drinking his own soapy bath water.

Some would and do argue that in the digital age of today, film photography is a dying art form. But there are those of us diehards that will see it to it’s end. It is my fervent opinion that film photography is like a fine wine to some, or a sequel that rarely surpasses the original. There are few things like black and white film photography that consistently retain such romanticism and beauty. Proud to say to some degree that I am not stubborn enough not to adapt to evolution.

Digital photography opens up avenues in photography that seemingly had never appeared prior to. Brilliance and vibrancy, sharpness and detail, things attainable through traditional film photography with seasoned hands, yet at your fingertips in the digital age. I fully embrace what technology has given us in regards to the arts, but again, I will go down swinging with film if it ever comes to it.
