Description 2010 RC deWinter ~ All Rights Reserved The year is 1940; you are 12 years old. Your best friend, Jack, suggests the two of you explore the house, abandoned for many years, standing out by the field where you & the other fellows play ball. You hesitate; one night while headed home, Billy Gardner reportedly saw the spectre of a man in a top hat & tails in the broken window of the study; other boys have gone, intending to enter, & been frightened off by the loud creaking & groaning of the porch stairs as they step on them. But the most famous story is the one of the ghost that haunts the third floor & the attic; supposedly it has been seen through window in the stairwell travelling both up and down. 'Come on, be a sport,' Jack says. 'Those stories are a lot of hooey.' You nod OK, but your heart thumps hard in your chest as afternoon gives way to twilight &, armed with your trusty flashlights, you & Jack climb the porch stairs; there is no sound but the chirping of the crickets in the nearby field. Jack pushes the front door open & you enter, shining your lights this way & that to illuminate as much of the interior of the house as possible; so far so good. You wander around, peeking into the parlor, the dining room, the back antechamber & finally, the kitchen. There's not a sign of anything spectral. Jack spies the back stairs leading up from the kitchen. 'Here we go!' he laughs & heads up the stairs. There's nothing much on the second floor, just bedrooms & a playroom. 'Time to find the ghost!' cries Jack, after your lights have revealed nothing but some old furniture, dust & cobwebs. He heads back down the hall to the stairway. 'Jack,' you whisper, though why you feel compelled to whisper you're not quite sure, 'let's just -' Jack shines his light full in your face & gives you a withering look; you shut up. And there you are, on the landing between the third floor & the attic. In front of you, a closed door; to your left, the stairs. Which way do you go?
