Two Trees
Even though they'd been there forever, for the first time she noticed the two trees along the perimeter of the back fence, now visible after the towering maples that had hidden them were gone; conifers that, even though she'd grown up in the green forests of New England, she couldn't identify, at least not taxonomically. But she recognized them all right. They were icons straight out of her earliest memories.
The larger of the two stood about four feet out from the fence, with the shorter one behind, a bit to the side, partially screened by the spread of the other.
She'd grown up scared and shy, afraid of everything new, including people; when introduced shed always hung back, sheltered behind her mother's skirts. And there was always a skirt to hide behind; in those days if women were out and about skirts were de rigueur, especially when in company.
Now her mother was old and bent, no longer ramrod straight and self-assured, lost in a world that had changed too much, too rapidly, a woman so far out of the loop she never realized there was one, while she herself was tall and straight and not afraid of much of anything anymore.
And although she didn't return the favor by wearing sheltering skirts too often, she'd noticed that now, out in company together, her mother was the one who hung back - whether through fear of appearing ignorant or simply uninterested in the unfamiliar - as if hiding.
She looked again at those two trees and smiled, because there they were - she and her mother - having, after all these years, switched places. ~copyright 2015 RC deWinter
