DescriptionCopyright 2016 RC deWinter The Promise Your godmother still lives in the same house, the one you used to visit every summer so long ago. That life seems like a dream in the fractured present, a reality so removed from those days it could be science fiction. The old bench still sits in the back garden, too; now splintered a bit, the paint fading to a memory of blue; no one sits there much anymore. But we sat there, didn't we, giggling, sharing secrets; that's where we made the promise. 'We'll get married when we grow up,' you said, and I hid my face behind my waterfall of hair and blushed; even then I was uncomfortable with affection. Cousins not in blood but in name and therefore in the eyes of the law, what did we know of consanguinity, and had we known would we have cared? I doubt it. Those were the days of the Lone Ranger, of Superman, when the good guys always won; we lived in the best, most wonderful country in the whole wide world. We could be anything, do anything, as long as we behaved. God was on our side. Of course we never did marry. Now, in the coming twilight you sit, comfortable, solvent, self-assured, while I - no longer ignorant but still rebelling, still incorruptible - sleep on a bed of nails, with only words and pride to sustain me. I know you could never understand my life, but I understand yours, and, for all its promise fulfilled, would not trade mine for it.~ excerpt from The Promise
