Alas For Love
It was a bonny dawning that May, bright, Fair fit for merriment and rustic glee, Young William Price arose full of delight, For hed been promised love from Alice Lee.
Theyd meet along with other village young Down at the Maypole in the farthest field, And there theyd dance and give full-throated tongue To songs in celebration of loves yield.
He dressed with care, he wanted to impress The maiden he so ardently desired, And setting out had no doubt of success In winning Alice, so long his admired.
But William, coming to the maypole, saw His Alice claimed by his own faithless brother, Who held her hand and then did boldly draw Her to him in a closeness like to smother.
And turning, all his world in pieces lay, Life not worth living without Alice Lee. Young William Price cursed love, alackaday, And hanged himself from his own hawthorn tree. 2014 RC deWinter
