Artist Statement My work is an obsessive, process based practice that creates a dialogue between different ways of working. I am attracted to beauty in my everyday life that is often overlooked, such as a used painter’s palette or messy studio walls. I abstract these forms through a series of steps. I select a type of studio debris that catches my eye, either due to color relationships or composition, and then I attempt to contain and organize it on the canvas. I play with the idea of randomness by wiping dirty brushes as I paint onto a loose piece of canvas. By doing this, I relinquish some control over the painting. After, I insert my aesthetic back into the painting with clean sharp lines and geometric shapes.

My practice comes from my desire to be clean but my inability to do so because of my messy nature. The more time I spend in the studio, the more debris I create to continue the cycle of making. The source imagery remains consistent as I work on a painting but is abstracted in the completed work through over simplification. This is my attempt to clean up a mess I created that I find beautiful. The goal for making is to discover something unexpected through different types of debris in the studio.
