Relentless autumn winds have swept away most of the season's beauty. There is, however, one sturdy maple still flame red. Admiring it from the front step, an unexpected twinge of passion pinched me and of course I thought of you; the celluloid images melted in the heat. I had to look away, the desire that could not be answered overwhelming.
I fixed my gaze on a naked tree; one likely dying, so bare and scarred it was. And yet again you surfaced. I remembered your sinewy limbs - harsh, rough - locked around me like the serpents of Laocoon, but unlike that cursed priest I welcomed them then. I would welcome them now. But that thought ends in a thorny cul-de-sac.
And then the darkened sky began to shed an early snow - unforecast, unexpected, airborne memories glittering in streetlight glare. I recalled everything about our last coupling; to banish that memory I imagined you dying, like that tree, and how that would fix everything. Foolish me; foolish thought. Our bond, broken for the nonce, is stronger than the grave.
Defeated by the past, I turned to go inside, my face wet not with snow but tears. ~ copyright 2015 RC deWinter
