Regluing
I sit in the anteroom in the dark, watching the moon move across the sky through a many-paned, uncurtained window, my mind as blank as the solemn midnight blue unenlivened by cloud or star.
The crickets have stopped singing; an early autumn frost has either killed them or forced them into diapause. Whatever the cause, I miss their rackety chorus, for when I am alone without a thought to cling to their chirping fixes the world in place.
But there are apples. Someone has lined the windowsill with apples; there they sit, different kinds in different colors, haloed in silver light that has travelled over two hundred thousand miles in just over a second to illuminate them, transforming mundane fruit into shimmering globes of carnival glass.
And then I am relieved; my mind has reengaged. I've remembered the distance of the moon from the earth and the speed of light as it shoots through space; memories of shiny old vases standing on pine-panelled shelves flood my brain.
I stop focusing on breathing and am suddenly hungry; I haven't eaten all day. The world is back, fixed in place. I get up and take an apple from the sill. ~ copyright 2015 RC deWinter
