October Night, Route 7
Driving late, alone, through the hilly curves of the Berkshires, I was tired. I'd stayed too long, reluctant to leave the congeniality of friends and food and fire.
I had a good three hours before I could claim my bed's embrace; it was a spectacular New England autumn and I was sorry not to be able to see nature's handiwork, though as the road twisted and turned the smile of the full moon occasionally afforded a brief glimpse of what so many make pilgrimage to admire.
Though it was quiet, the road almost deserted, I was haunted - by what I didn't know. I drove in silence - no radio, no CD; I wanted to explore the almost-sadness that enveloped me.
And then, as the road curved round a bend, I knew. The moon, fully exposed, illuminated all. I saw the river shining as it rushed to its appointment with the dam, and then falling, falling, in small golden waves.
Across that band of blue was the copse of trees I remembered as clearly as I remembered you, holding me as we stood, your wool sweater roughing my face as you promised me a different moon along with every star that glittered that October night.
My heart broke in half as I slammed my foot on the accelerator. It would be fatal to linger there, caught in a spiderweb of broken promises in the light of a moon that was not my moon.
I turned on some music - loud - and forgot the moon, forgot the stars, As I reached up to wipe away rebellious tears, my face twitched and tingled as though still buried in that wool full of the scent of you. ~ copyright 2016 RC deWinter
