Tinseltown Clown
Juggling, turning cartwheels, I entertain every day the sun shines, which where I live is nearly always. I wear the gaudy motley, cap and bells and shake my rattle for the crowd; it works - they laugh and then dismiss me.
That's how I want it. This is my comfort zone.
Comedy's my best defense in this, the shallowest of pools known to man. In a place where real doesn't exist there's no point in the sincere. No one would buy it anyway, so I sell what sells.
My tricks have never failed me, my legerdemain is legend.
Only when alone - which isn't often - with seven televisions blaring to annihilate the silence do I strip off my bright armor scrub away the greasepaint and descend to who I am.
After decades of denial and repeated reinvention I wonder just how much of me is left
.If I concentrate - and depending on the quantity of cactus juice I've swallowed - I can find that skinny kid whose brain was trained and beaten into something to be proud of by those solemn blackrobed men on a ghetto mission from God.
I even went to college but so what?
Inside this big top brains and a dollar will get you a fastfood burger, nothing more .My son the lawyer visits me from out of town. When he does I pull up what's left of the serious me and try to talk to him, to be a dad; he doesn't recognize that man.
If I had a regret that would be it, but you gotta play the game to stay alive and so I do.
I made my deal; I'm happy with it as long as there's enough tequila. I go to parties most of you can only dream of, I have five women and a schedule for each. I have these little statues on a shelf, the proof of my survival in the tank.
