Eli's Barn
Wandering, one bright spring day, up where Eli Mason used to farm - those fields mostly now reclaimed by marauding armies of pines - I found one barn still standing. It had worn well, although wind and weather had redecorated some.
Built in the day when barns were ignorant of pressboard soaked in chemicals to game nature, its planks glowed in the April sun, rich browns fading to gold; some wide boards, blued where all the paint had given up the ghost, showed wood shamelessly naked.
A patchwork quilt of craftsmanship, it stood defiant in the face of time, marked but not destroyed by its long years of service. The bits of hardware holding crossbeams pocked with age were solid; it would take more than sun and snow to pry them loose from their appointed purpose.
I found it beautiful.
And isn't that what we do, those of us made for the long haul? Sternly straight, unprotected in the face of the worst life throws at us, we stand, scarred but sturdy, some worse for wear here and there, but settled in, solid, and, looking past the teethmarks of time, still beautiful. ~ copyright 2016 RC deWinter
