Trip to the Cathedral
The prevailing wind, these late summer days, is from the south. The air is salty-sweet; the scent of the sea clings to me even when the thirsty bloodsuckers that descend at dusk drive me indoors. Eventually these vampiric predators disappear, losing themselves in the shadows; there are bats abroad.
It is then I walk to the sea. The streetlights magnify everything in silhouette; the world becomes an expressionist landscape peopled with the grotesque. It's easy to imagine monsters lurking, but I am not afraid. It's just the obverse of the day, when one can lie back on the earth watching the mythical creatures in the clouds float by.
The atmosphere intensifies, growing heavier, sharper as I near the sea. And then, unseen but felt, I am walking not on pavement but on sand. The shoes come off; I carry them like a sacrifice to Neptune. It's a pretty thought, but I dare not fling them into those voracious depths; the journey home would be a painful one. Pitiless pebbles and bits of glass await the unwary.
The tide is in, each rhythmic meeting with the shore a lusty kiss rearranging the shell and seaweed runes that hem its edge. And there, off to the east, hangs the moon, a silver scimitar stolen from some sky warrior, overseeing the behavior of its charge.
I know science has proved the moon nothing more than a dead rock orbiting the earth, but when I see its surface shining, reflecting the radiance of sun, I suspend disbelief, shedding all rationality, becoming once again a child of Diana. I breathe a fervent prayer and turn to go; my renewal is complete. ~ copyright 2015 RC deWinter
